Civic Center is one of San Francisco’s truly urban regions with an eclectic mix of Victorian flats and high-rise apartments. It stretches north of Market St. and includes the Tenderloin and portions of Van Ness. There’s easy access to the 101, and the Financial District is a brief ride on the Muni. An eclectic mix of cultures rub elbows in the area that was once in the shadow of the Central Freeway Artery. Since the Artery was shut down after the 1989 earthquake, Hayes St. has become the neighborhood’s vibrant shopping district. Within easy walking distance are The Opera and The Symphony in the Civic Center. Homes in the area are mostly contemporary apartments, but some Victorian flats can be found closer to Franklin St. New housing complexes like the Marquee Lofts and Pacific Place are on Van Ness alongside more seasoned condos from the 70s and 80s like Daniel Burnham Court and Opera Plaza.
